Our 60th Season

Letter from the conductor

Welcome to the Denver Philharmonic!

This season marks the 60th anniversary of our orchestra, which makes us one of the oldest community orchestras in this part of the United States. Congratulations to all the orchestra members present and those of the past! You are what makes this orchestra a great musical ensemble.

Sixty years is enough reason to celebrate with great concerts, several superb artists, and a few very special programs. The first program features Cuban born guitarist Ricardo Iznaola who has been hailed as “a truly visionary virtuoso” with great accomplishments. Maestro Iznaola will present one of his compositions, as well as a rarely heard concerto by Giuliani. The DPO will close this program with Debussy’s Iberia, a masterpiece of French Impressionism.

Our two November programs are centered around Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5, “The Reformation.” The first performance takes us to the magnificent Episcopal Cathedral of St. John’s and will present the German organ virtuoso Roland Stangier in his U.S. debut with Guilmant’s grandiose Symphony No. 1 for Organ and Orchestra. The program will be modified at St. Elizabeth’s Church on the Auraria campus celebrating the 800th birthday of Elizabeth of Hungary with a special presentation of music from Liszt’s Oratorio, “The Legend of Saint Elizabeth.”

Our December holiday program will present some of the most popular classics, e.g., Rachmaninoff’s “Paganini” Variations with Russian pianist Irina Moreland, as well as a special selection of music for Christmas and the holiday season. In January you can hear our fabulous orchestra members in their annual chamber music program, an eye and ear opening delight, as we have heard last year.

DPO’s very own Bass Trombonist Bruce Blomquist is one of the finest players on this instrument, and I am very happy to have him as our soloist for the February concert with a spectacular concerto by Rimsky-Korsakov. The remainder of that program features the great German composer Franz Schreker, who is almost completely unknown in this country, with one of the most colorful scores of the late Romantic period, as well as Elgar’s Symphony No. 2.

March will present Italian pianist Aldo Ragone, truly one of the most outstanding pianists in his generation, with Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 5. The second half of that program with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Sheherazade” will introduce the DPO’s new wonderful concertmaster, Kathy Thayer, as a soloist in this most brilliant score.

The final concert program of the season features the young American violin virtuoso Jesse Mills from New York, who has already established an amazing reputation with Colorado audiences after his debut with the Colorado Symphony, as well as at the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival. The program is an all German classic: Webern, Mozart, Brahms - a great culmination of a grand season.
